Distributed Solar & Storage - I have spent my last 16 years in the never-dull industry of distributed generation, founding (what would rebrand to) Pivot Energy in 2019. Pivot has diversified its focus areas over time, which has served it well, starting with Onsite C&I solar and storage, before adding capabilities in community solar, offsite corporate solar, stand alone storage, and small utility projects.

Pivot has raised over $1.5 B across its life and is now a fully vertically-integrated DG IPP, doing business with some of the largest companies and utilities in the U.S. In recent years, I learned quite a bit about how to effectively build software and systems, while scaling a complex operation.

Sustainable Real Estate Development - Prior to Pivot, I was founder of the Sage Companies, a real estate development firm with a focus on certified green projects. It was here that I learned the basics in financing long term assets, construction, and clean energy - basics that would serve me well as I shifted focus to solar. My move to the solar industry was motivated by an interest to have more impact, and to build a company that would scale more quickly.

Impact and Culture - perhaps the thing I am most proud of in my career is the type of companies that I was able to help bring in to being - companies that are characterized by:

1. Continually focused on having an impact, both by operating sustainably, and by aiming at goals that make a difference. With Sage, we lived out the sustainability we were infusing in our projects. Pivot is a certified B-Corporation that takes ESG goals seriously.

2. Known for having a strong culture that engages employees to do their greatest work, and a people-centric approach that isn’t afraid to have a little fun amidst all the challenges. Even as pivot has grown beyond 200 employees, it has been able to maintain the ethos that is the secret to its success.

Looking ahead - After a successful exit from Pivot, I am now looking to put what I have learned to work for others - for investors and execs, startups and scaling companies.

I am so grateful to have a wonderful wife and 3 grown kids. We live in Boulder, Colorado, the happiest city, where we take full advantage of our proximity to the Rockies, spending a lot of time doing all the mountain activities.
