Bio

Rick is a seasoned entrepreneur, executive, and now investor and advisor.

Scaling in Clean Energy
In 2009, he founded Pivot Energy, a fully vertically-integrated Distributed Generation (DG) Independent Power Producer (IPP). Under his leadership, Pivot Energy grew to become one of the largest companies in its market segment, eventually attracting major investment from Energy Capital Partners (ECP).

The growth of the company was driven by a diversification strategy across the markets for Onsite Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar and battery storage, community solar, offsite corporate solar, stand-alone storage, and small utility-scale projects.

Pivot Energy has secured over $3 billion in capital throughout its history and now partners with some of the largest companies and utilities across the U.S. Hunter’s experience in scaling a complex operation provided him with significant expertise in building effective teams, software and systems.

Sustainable Real Estate Development

Prior to establishing Pivot Energy, Hunter founded the Sage Companies, a real estate development firm dedicated to certified green projects. This experience laid the groundwork for his expertise in long-term asset financing, construction, and clean energy—knowledge that proved foundational to his transition into the solar industry. His shift to solar was driven by a desire for greater impact and the ambition to build a company with accelerated scale.

Core Professional Values and Achievements

A hallmark of Hunter's career is his dedication to building companies defined by two core characteristics:

  1. Commitment to Impact: A continual focus on creating impact through sustainable operations and ambitious, meaningful goals. The Sage Companies embedded sustainability into their projects, while Pivot Energy operates as a certified B-Corporation, rigorously upholding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.

  2. Strong Culture and People-Centric Approach: Fostering a robust culture that empowers employees to achieve their best work. Even as Pivot expanded beyond 200 employees, the company has maintained a unique and engaging ethos, recognized as key to its success.

Current Focus

After a successful exit from Pivot Energy, Hunter is now focused on investing in and advising companies and organizations in the broader sustainability and energy space.
